(Columbia, SC) “In 2018 Internet payments in Richland County increased 8.7% over 2017, and were 18.2% of all tax bills collected. “It might not be a cadillac, but our citizens are finding that our website is the easiest to ‘search and pay’ in South Carolina,” said Richland County Treasurer David Adams. “Giving people easy options in how they choose to pay taxes is our priority, and the numbers show we are succeeding.”
The numbers show that internet collections have increased 107.8% in five years (2013). 91,246 internet payments were made in 2018 totaling $50.7 million in 2018. The addition of QR Codes which takes a taxpayer straight to their tax bill on-line using an app, was added to the tax bills with Auditor Paul Brawley’s Office, and was responsible for 1,657 of the internet payments in 2018 (a 46.4%) increase over the prior year. The Richland County Treasurer’s Office collected 500,910 tax bills in 2018.
“As our tax base increases we process more bills each year. Last year we collected over 500,000 tax bills with same 30 people in our office we’ve had for the last 15 years,” Adams said. “The ease of our internet payments hasn’t just helped our citizens conduct their business on-line, it has helped us successfully manage the county’s growth more efficiently.”
