August 2022 – NIP SPEED Event: Being Prepared with Probate Court
Description: NIP presents a talk with Amy McCulloch, the Richland County Probate Judge. Probate Court serves the community by administering estates and executing wills, issuing marriage licenses, appointing guardianships and conservatorships, ordering involuntary commitments of mentally ill or chemically dependent persons, and hears and decides trust and estate litigation. Attendees can learn and ask questions about these functions of Probate Court and what it means for them and their families.

September 2022: Have Your Voice Heard with the Ombudsman’s Office
Description: NIP and RCNC invite attendees to come learn about the Richland County Ombudsman’s Office. The Ombudsman is an impartial dispute-resolutioner, whose major function is to provide informal assistance to citizens and to assist citizens with county concerns and request for service. Richland County residents can call the Ombudsman to voice their concerns and request county services. Kelly Fleming from the Ombudsman’s Office will be available to speak with attendees and answer any questions they may have regarding the department’s functions.

Neighborhood Enrichment Grant Program Training
Description: Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) staff will present an overview of the Neighborhood Enrichment Grant Program, including what types of projects are eligible for grant funds and what you need to submit a successful application.

January 2023: NIP SPEED Event: Promoting Community Health Resources
Description: NIP invites neighborhood leaders to our January SPEED event to learn about community health resources in Richland County. A community health representative from PRISMA will be available to speak about their initiatives. PRISMA provides many health and wellness services for neighborhoods and the Richland County community. Come join us for this informative session before the regularly scheduled meeting of the Richland County Neighborhood Council.

February 2023: NIP SPEED Event: Caring for Elderly Family and Neighbors
Description: The Richland County Neighborhood Council and NIP will host Leeza’s Care Connection to share with county residents how their organization assists those caring for elderly family or neighbors. Leeza’s Care Connection supports individuals and organizations who are caregivers for those with Alzheimer’s and other chronic illnesses. In addition to Leeza’s Care Connection, this month’s SPEED Event will also include a presentation by County Council Chairman, Overture Walker, who will speak on items of interest to neighborhoods and community leaders in Richland County. The regularly scheduled meeting of the Richland County Neighborhood Council will follow these presentations.

March 2023: NIP SPEED Event: Establishing a 501(c)(3) Organization
Description: The Richland County Neighborhood Council and NIP, in partnership with the Columbia Council of Neighborhoods, will host an information session on establishing a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Kim Wickersham from the South Carolina Secretary of State’s Office will inform attendees about the requirements and steps necessary to achieve and maintain non-profit status for their organizations. Please join us for an informative session on an important topic for HOAs and neighborhood associations in Richland County. The regularly scheduled meeting of the Richland County Neighborhood Council will follow the information session.

May 2023: Richland County Neighborhood Council Retreat: Rest, Revive, and Refresh
Description: Richland County Neighborhood Council invites neighborhood leaders and community members to its annual retreat. The theme for this year is health, wellness, and self-care. The training at the retreat focuses on teaching community leaders to identify and address stressors and public health challenges in their schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Attendees will come away with the skills and resources necessary to improve the health and wellbeing of their communities.
This year’s featured speaker is Anni Crook, Health Equity Program Coordinator for the Midlands Region at DHEC. In this role, she works with health department staff to identify and assess the services, policies, and strategies used to provide care for, and improve the health of South Carolina's minority and underserved populations. Additionally, she provides trainings revolving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Self-Care, and is a Certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Anni graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health in December 2020.
