Benefits
Health
Richland County Government offers employees and their dependents group medical coverage. The medical insurance is a traditional 20% in-network coinsurance plan. The plan network is nationwide and includes many physicians, hospitals and other healthcare practitioners.
Dental
Richland County Government offers employees and their dependents group dental coverage. Our dental plan allows you the flexibility to choose your dentist.
Retirement
Eligible employees are required to participate in either the South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS) or the Police Officer Retirement System (PORS), which are defined benefits programs administered by a division of the State Budget and Control Board. Under SCRS and PORS, employees’ contribute a percent of their salary. Richland County also contributes a percent of employees’ salary towards retirement. Employees are eligible for full retirement after 28 years of service, or at age 65 and 5 years of service under SCRS, and after 25 years of service, or age 55 and 5 years of service, under the PORS plan.
Vacation Leave
Each eligible new employee accrues 10 paid vacation days each year. They may be used at the discretion of the employee with the approval of your department head. An employee may carry over from one year to the next no more than 45 days of annual leave. After an employee has completed 10 continuous years of employment, the employee will start to accrue 15 days of paid vacation days. After completing 20 years of continuous employment an employee will accrue 20 days of paid vacation leave.
Sick Leave
Each eligible new employee accrues 12 days of paid sick leave per year, to be used in the event of a personal or family illness. This leave is considered a privilege, not a right, granted by Richland County. You may carry over from one year to the next, a maximum amount of 90 days of sick leave.
Paid Holidays
Each year eligible employees are entitled to fifteen (15) paid holidays per year.
Training
Richland County University
Richland County University is dedicated to offering training, education, and career development to all County employees. The new millennium presents County employees with many challenges and opportunities, not only to increase our knowledge and productivity, but also to provide more skilled services to the citizens of Richland County. Our catalog contains a description of services provided including: training classes, facilitation, mediation, as well as, information about our Resource Center.
With over 30 different classes available, employees have an opportunity to enhance their careers and improve their abilities. The classes are taught by professionals who are proficient in their fields. For those employees interested in management training, a leadership development program is available to prepare you for supervision and leadership roles.

Wellness
Rich Health
Richland County provides an employee health, wellness, nutrition, and education program called Rich Health. Our program's emphasis is on the prevention, early detection, and management of disease and the positive benefits of nutrition and fitness. Rich Health's intent is to create a more health-conscious work force, higher morale, lower absenteeism, and increased productivity on the job while saving of health care costs. Rich Health is coordinated through Human Resources.
