Illegal dumping is the improper disposal of waste at any location other than a permitted landfill or facility. Many different types of waste are disposed of improperly causing health and safety risks to people and property throughout our community:
•Chemicals or sharp objects
(Illegal dumps are often easily accessible to people, particularly children, who can be injured by these materials)
•Appliances and electronics
(Contain chemicals that can spill into the ground or water, causing contamination that can lead to illness or worse)
•Tires
(Tires often hold rain water becoming mosquito breeding grounds. Mosquitoes can breed 100 times faster in the warm stagnant water, than in more natural settings. Severe illnesses like encephalitis have been attributed to disease‐carrying mosquitoes coming from waste tires)
Richland County and DHEC have recently partnered to raise awareness of illegal dumping, and we are asking for help. We are asking our citizens to tell us if they see someone disposing of materials improperly, or find waste that has been. If you See it, call 803‐929‐6000 to Report it, and help us Stop it.
