Richland County will recognize Fair Housing Month in April with several activities that promote equal and fair housing for all.
Each April, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) marks the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. It prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and family status.
Fair Housing Month activities:
· 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 3 – Fostering Futures Youth Workshop sponsored by RC CASA at the Epworth Children’s Home. To reserve a seat, contact Missy Bowman at 803-576-1728.
· 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 7 – Richland County Council will recognize partner agencies committed to the elimination of housing discrimination in Richland County and statewide. The agencies to be recognized are the United States Department of Housing and Education, South Carolina Human Affairs Commission and the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council.
· 6 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 – Richland County Community Development and Councilwoman Julie-Ann Dixon have organized a Renters Rights and Responsibilities Workshop that is free and open to the public. The workshop is 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Richland Library Sandhills, 1 Summit Pkwy. Several presenters will comprise a panel for discussion regarding what tenants should know about the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act.
