At about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, a detainee from Richland County’s Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) died at a local hospital. The subject had been taken to the hospital shortly after 8 a.m. because of an “altered mental status,” according to nursing administration with ASGDC.

The County Coroner’s Office is investigating to determine the detainee’s cause of death. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department does not conduct investigations for deaths that occur outside of ASGDC.

The County will provide more information when it becomes available.
