Richland County Council officially will introduce its new Interim County Administrator to residents when it meets Nov. 13, but Edward Gomeau wasted no time getting to work since starting the job this week.
Gomeau has an extensive career in financial management and local government administration, having worked as a town manager and finance director in several northeast states during his more than 40-year career in public service. Prior to his appointment in Richland County, Gomeau was a financial consultant for a school district in Vergennes, Vt.
“As we continue the search for a permanent administrator, we look forward to working with Mr. Gomeau during this time of transition,” said Council Chair Joyce Dickerson, District 2. “Richland County has many opportunities ahead and we are hopeful Mr. Gomeau’s experience and leadership will benefit this organization and those we serve.”
Gomeau arrived Monday and quickly immersed himself in getting acquainted with Richland County employees and operations. He is meeting with various staff members, reading volumes of material and touring the area.
“I’m finding that Richland County has insightful leaders and talented employees who enjoy what they do,” Gomeau said. “I’m confident that working together, we can accomplish a great deal to move the County forward and build upon the public trust.”
Gomeau holds a MBA in financial management from Suffolk University in Boston and a M.S. in operations research from New York University Tandon School of Engineering. He has won several awards for his public service and has experience in housing, disaster recovery, labor negotiations and instruction. He has managed organizations of varying sizes, including the Town of Greenwich, Conn., with an employee roll of 2,200 – similar to Richland County.
“Mr. Gomeau has expressed his commitment to getting to know our employees and their needs and how best we can serve our residents,” Dickerson said. “Most importantly, he will work to maintain the level of excellent service put forth by employees who, during the absence of an administrator, have worked diligently to be responsive to the needs of residents and businesses.”
Council will meet 6 p.m. Nov. 13 in Council Chambers, 2020 Hampton St., Columbia.
