Invasive Species Removal
Thanks to the University of South Carolina service students, the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation, and Fuss and O'Neill, Keep the Midlands Beautiful and Sustainable Midlands for a great partnership for an Invasive Species Removal Workday at Granby Park on Saturday, October 11th 10:00am - 2:00pm.
Chinese and Japanese privet were the primary species targeted for removal during the workday. Parks staff and volunteers used chainsaws and hand tools to cut invasive shrubs and trees off a few feet above ground level. Cut stumps were then treated with herbicide to prevent regrowth. Privet removal opened the viewshed and increased light penetration in the forest. In just a few hours, volunteers created several large windrows of cut material for removal
