Columbia, SC—Nominate a Richland County teacher who works to build students’ love for the planet and their ability to be environmental stewards as Richland County's Conservation Teacher of the Year by April 30, 2021.
The Conservation Teacher of the Year program, sponsored in Richland County by the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), seeks to recognize and reward educators who prioritize environmental learning and teach their traditional curriculum through a conservation-minded lens. Previous Conservation Teachers of the Year have been champions of school gardens, outdoor classrooms, nature trails, recycling, upcycling, composting, water conservation, and more.
Teachers at any public, private, or alternative school in Richland County are eligible to receive this award. Prior winners are eligible to receive the award a second time. Self-nominations and nominations from individuals or groups who are familiar with the teacher’s activities related to this award are all acceptable.
The Richland County Conservation Teacher of the Year will receive a $100 cash award and a $500 Conservation Education Mini-Grant for their school. The awardee will be recognized at the Richland SWCD's Annual Banquet, and they will progress to the statewide Conservation Teacher of the Year competition sponsored by the SC Association of Conservation Districts.

Conservation Districts are political subdivisions of state government under the local direction of five-member Boards of Commissioners. In South Carolina, Conservation District boundaries conform to County boundaries. The Richland Soil and Water Conservation District promotes the wise use and care of natural resources for long-term sustainability.
