Columbia, SC—Natalie Elizabeth McElveen, a second grader at Logan Elementary School in Richland County School District One, was recently named a state winner in the 2018 Conservation Poster Contest sponsored by the SC Association of Conservation Districts. McElveen was in first grade when she created her poster.
This year’s contest theme was “Watersheds: Our Water, Our Home,” and student posters illustrated the importance of healthy watersheds and how human actions affect water quality. McElveen’s poster, pictured above, illustrates the water cycle, the movement of water through a watershed, and various uses of water resources, from growing crops to providing wildlife habitat. McElveen will receive a cash award, and her poster will progress to the national competition.
More than 400 students participated in this year’s state contest, which is supported and administered locally by each county’s Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). State winners in the 2018 Conservation Poster Contest included:
- K-1st Grade Division: Natalie Elizabeth McElveen, Richland SWCD
- 2nd-3rd Grade Division: Jessie Stevenson Byrd IV, Chesterfield SWCD
- 4th-6th Grade Division: Claire Gilfillan, York SWCD
- 7th-9th Grade Division: Maliha Attarwaca, Lexington SWCD
